Listen to your heart, they say, it will lead you. Listen to your soul, they say, it will light a path through the darkest of forests for you. But what if your soul, like a battered boat cast ashore, lies still, pressed humbly into the sand, without movement, without a flicker of expectation? Even the lazy rocking of the waves no longer tempts it, much less the thrill of laughing recklessly in the face of storms. Suddenly, it has come to like the kind of comfort and peace that comes with being part of this shore, just being, existing without seeking purpose, only now and then listening to the surf’s murmur, a distant echo of a once-wild, restless life.

Glancing through news (like this one here, among many others) about what looks like a pretty heated WordPress vs. WP Engine battle only reinforces thoughts I’ve had for a while: if you’re setting up a site, ask yourself a hundred times whether a static site might be all you need. If the answer’s yes, then do yourself a favour and go static. You might later thank yourself for avoiding dependency on yet another provider, however “solid,” “everlasting,” or “trustworthy” they may seem.

Slowly, with a lazy swagger, I step into your wide-open concrete maw. I stroll leisurely, passing the graffiti-scarred walls of your cheeks. Lighting a cigarette, I feel the scent of your helplessness blend with the smoke. You want to swallow me, to savour the crunch of my bones, just like you wished to crunch the bones of those who passed before me and those who'll pass after. But those concrete jaws will never close. That is your curse. Goodbye for now, forever-hungry concrete beast. Till next time.

I remember staying in this flat for a couple of years. It was a studio flat, with windows facing a rather enclosed inner yard. No matter the network, there was hardly any mobile signal inside, and that was before WiFi calling became widespread. O2 at the time had a separate WiFi Calling app called TuGo, which was a lifesaver.

Channelled my inner "mmm
donuts” Homer Simpson. Pasties, not donuts though. Sorry, Greggs, but I’ve moved up a league today.
