Mutter Bundle #8: Tucking into That SLICE Whilst Trying to Forget That Robot Thingy

It appears that Apple has, rather quietly, sneakily even, introduced a feature in iOS 18.1 that you might actually appreciate if you’re concerned (and who isn’t?) about the security of your data. And anyone trying to get into your phone, whether that’s hackers or law enforcement, will have yet another headache. Apparently, if your iPhone hasn’t been used for several (four, I believe?) days, it reboots itself, meaning that for it to be unlocked again, Face/Touch ID no longer works until you enter a numerical passcode.

I’ve had people passionately disagree with me on this, but I’ve always seen Chrome OS as a bit… well, neither fish nor fowl. It feels like a concept that dilutes the essence of what could otherwise be a great idea for a no-frills laptop, turning it instead into a no-frills laptop with an identity crisis. Ever since I first heard about Chrome OS, I’ve been crossing my fingers for it to bow out gracefully, either by growing up into a proper Linux distro or hopping on the Android train.

Now, it seems Google might finally be thinking along the same lines, taking Chrome OS to a new level, albeit choosing the path I’d personally rank as second best, i.e. Android.

What’s with the obsession with mobile phones being thinner than thin? Is there really an obsession, or are we being tricked into believing this is the must-have aesthetic that everyone wants? Meanwhile, what people

I am currently in my third month with Slice Mobile, and whilst it’s not a bad EE (EE/Lyca?) based MVNO as such, there still appear to be quite a few teething issues that prevent me personally from making their SIM my main one.

As a data SIM or backup SIM, though, they’re more than fine. The customer service team does seem genuinely interested in making things right.
